Eating disorders are serious mental and physical health conditions that can affect eating behaviors, thoughts about food and body image, physical health, and daily life. With appropriate professional support, recovery is possible.
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by persistent restriction of food intake, intense concerns about weight or body shape, and difficulty recognizing the seriousness of low body weight or nutritional restriction. It can cause significant physical and emotional health complications and requires compassionate, specialized care. Building positive emotional experiences
Bulimia nervosa involves recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by behaviors intended to compensate for eating, such as self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, or other restrictive behaviors. People with bulimia may experience intense concerns about weight and body shape while maintaining a wide range of body weights.
Binge-eating disorder (BED) involves repeated episodes of eating an unusually large amount of food accompanied by a feeling of loss of control. Episodes may be followed by distress, guilt, or shame. Unlike bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder does not regularly involve compensatory behaviors such as purging.
ARFID is an eating disorder involving significant restriction or avoidance of food that is not primarily driven by concerns about body weight or appearance. Food avoidance may be related to sensory sensitivities, fear of negative consequences such as choking or vomiting, or low interest in eating. ARFID can affect nutrition, growth, energy, and overall health.
OSFED describes clinically significant eating disorder symptoms that cause distress or impairment but do not meet all the diagnostic criteria for another specific eating disorder. OSFED is a real and treatable eating disorder and should not be considered less serious simply because it falls outside another diagnosis
Persistent distress about body size, shape, weight, or appearance can occur alongside eating disorders and disordered eating. Addressing body image concerns can be an important part of treatment and recovery.
UFED may be used when eating disorder symptoms cause significant distress or impairment, but there is not enough information available to assign a more specific diagnosis. Further assessment can help determine the most appropriate treatment and support.
Disordered eating refers to unhealthy or concerning eating patterns that may not meet the criteria for a diagnosed eating disorder. Examples can include chronic dieting, rigid food rules, skipping meals, emotional eating, or significant anxiety around food. Early support can help prevent these patterns from becoming more severe.
Every person's experience is different. Our multidisciplinary team provides individualized support addressing nutrition, physical health, emotional well-being, behaviors, and recovery goals.
If you or someone you care about is struggling with eating or food-related concerns, professional support can be an important step toward recovery.
